ARTIST'S STATEMENT
Orchestrating the play of light in a painterly manner is an important aspect of my work. I feel I have succeeded if the viewer experiences my connection to the subject - the strong feeling this subject evoked when I began the painting. The way light falls across the subject should give the viewer the feeling that he is almost "there". Even a small spark of light in the right place can give something to the viewer.
I've spent a lifetime around tidal waters - first in the Delaware Valley of Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey and more recently in Eastern Georgia and South Carolina. I feel invigorated by The Lowcountry in and around Charleston/Savannah/Brunswick. Nature's breathing in and breathing out in the form of the ebb and flow of tides is somehow comforting and a necessary thing for me to experience.
For 25 years I studied art at Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Traveling and painting in Spain and France over the past eight years have offered a variety of subjects. Landscapes provide the opportunity for plein aire work while still life, an interesting and somewhat more acedemic exercise, I find more suitable for those days when weather forces me indoors. Introducing figures in the landscape has been a recent focus.
